Yellowstone Park: Top 6 Things to See and Do

I first came to the Park in 1972. I was a year out of high school and traveling about the west in an ancient Studebaker with my friend Mike and my dog Grover. We'd been sleeping in my car by the roadside so we were happy to have work and a place to stay when they hired us on as housekeepers at the Old Faithful Inn.

The Park really hasn't changed much. That's part of its natural charisma.

1. Old Faithful Inn

This is your lodging of preference. Full of charm and logs, this seven story structure was built in 1904 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. You will have to book far in advance or get lucky to get a room here. Dine on rainbow trout and buffalo meat at the buffet, then wander out to see the geyser. In the morning you'll find an espresso bar on the second floor.

2. Old Faithful Geyser

There is some irregularity to this faithful feature but it is still relatively predictable. Kind of like an old dog that always comes home after roaming the neighborhood. Currently, it blows its stack 184 feet into the air about every 80 minutes or so.

3. Animals

You are going to see animals. Plan on it. It can even be unnerving to have a two-ton bison crossing the road a few feet from your car. Elk and bison abound. Bear and moose are harder to find, so if you spot one, count yourself lucky.

Be wise though. These animals really are wild. Tales were told of a friendly tourist who wanted his picture with a buffalo. He gave the camera to his wife and walked up to the beast. Placing is arm over the bison's back he quickly found a horn in his chest.

Is this story true? I have no idea. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Don't become a cautionary tale. Use good judgment. Though they appear "bovine" (literary term for "cattle" and "slow") these buffalo can run up to 40 miles per hour. That, according to Wikipedia, is as fast as a thoroughbred race horse. (Wouldn't that be an interesting contest!)

4. Yellowstone Falls

It's a short trip on a side road to see the Yellowstone River, brimming with ice cold Yellowstone Lake water, pour in to the abyss of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Some consider this to be the most beautiful spot in the park.

5. Yellowstone Lake

It is very beautiful and you can catch fish here but if you are planning to spend time on the water please have a back up plan. Weather changes fast at 7000 feet and a sudden storm could capsize your boat. The water is so cold that some visitors have suffered death from hypothermia.

6. The Fishing Bridge

Actually, since 1953, you CAN'T fish at the fishing bridge so leave your pole in the car. Just beneath the bridge is a major spawning ground for cutthroat trout. They had to ban fishing at the bridge as the fish count in the lake was dwindling badly.

Conclusion

There's a lot more to see and do there and you could spend weeks and not see everything but here's a little list to get you started. Be careful, bring warm clothes and have a good time. Once you've been to the Park you'll want to return again and again.

The power of the Toyota-designed "smart" engine adequately compensates for the SUV's 5,688-pound curb weight.

The engine first appeared in the United States in the company's Tundra pick-up truck in 2007, coinciding with Toyota's 50th anniversary of its entry into the U.S. automobile market. VVT-i engines were incorporated into the Land Cruiser the following year. The newly-designed engine was part of an overall redesign of the Cruiser.

"Intelligent" design employs an onboard computer that continually monitors whether the sports utility vehicle (SUV) is accelerating, cruising, passing, idling, or going uphill or down. Every hundredth of a second, the computer subtly prompts any automatic adjustments of the air intake and exhaust necessary to maintain maximize engine performance. As a result, emissions in the 2010 are reduced enough to eliminate the need for an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) emissions device.

VVT-i technology has improved the vehicle's gas mileage, as well. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mileage for the 1997 pre-VVT-i Cruiser was estimated at 12 miles per gallon (mpg) city and 14 mpg highway, with a combined average of 13 mpg. Mileage estimates for the 2010 model stand at 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway, with a combined average of 15 mpg.

The dual Variable Valve Timing Intelligent engine works in an unassuming way, literally under cover; but it occupies an important position in the enhancement of under-the-hood technology. Hand tools can be easily judged for quality, long life and usefulness if you just learn a few simple rules. Here are some tips and tricks of the trade for making great selections without breaking the bank.

Look for add-ons and gadgets

The reason that all the great tools never change is they were already perfect.  Improvements to grip, contact surface toughness and ergonomics can be very useful and add to the life of the tool. Big changes like changeable bits, reversible shafts, and ratchets contained in small handles are not true improvements. These kinds of changes only make the tool have weak points that are bound to fail in anything other than light and occasional use.

For instance a hand screwdriver that has ¼ inch hex recess and magnet in the end of the shaft and multiple bits with a ratchet in the handle has inherent problems. The shaft is weakened because the hollow to accept the bit is very thin walled and has a tendency to warp and enlarge allowing the bits to wobble.  This can also make alignment difficult. The ratchet in the handle doesn’t last because the parts are so small and inexpensively made even the torque an average person can apply with one hand is enough to cause failure. 

Look for tolerances in manufacturing

Hand tools with moving parts are especially subject to failure. Just because a tool has a nice chrome or matte finish does not mean it is a quality tool. Two-part hand tools such as hand pliers and water pump pliers can be judged by how smoothly they operate without being loose. If one handle can be twisted in comparison to the other than you can bet the tool is of low quality.  Unfortunately tool manufacturers are all too familiar with the average consumer’s weaknesses.  If the packaging is attractive enough and the appearance of the tool is expensive, they know they can skimp on the actual quality of the tool itself.   

Look for comparisons between two tools

Many times you can quickly tell the difference in the true quality of a tool by comparing it side by side with another brand.  A ratchet wrench, for instance, should have very little turn in the driving shaft before it clicks into the next locking tooth.  Turn two ratchets upside down and turn the drive observing how far it turns before it clicks.  Pick another and perform the same test.  If one is higher quality than the other, the difference will be obvious.  Take some time to play with the tools in the store before you decide which one to buy.
